‘Don Mario’ sentenced to 17 years in jail

Captured drug lord Daniel Rendon Herrera, alias “Don Mario,” on Monday was sentenced to 17 years in jail for the murder of a lawyer in 2003.

According to a judge in the central Colombian city of Villavicencio, “Don Mario” ordered the kidnapping and murder of attorney Jose Absalom Achury Florez.

The attorney was kidnapped by paramilitaries from the town of Granada, Meta, on May 16, 2003, and was found dead 11 days later in his car 10 miles from where he was kidnapped.

Don Mario was convicted for aggravated homicide, kidnapping and conspiracy.

Before his arrest in April 2009, the former paramilitary commander led the drug gang “Los Urabeños.”
