Doctors give freed FARC hostage clean bill of health

Colombian doctors say that liberated FARC hostage Pablo Emilio Moncayo’s mental and physical health are sound, despite the fact he suffered from a parasitic disease during his 12 year imprisonment by the rebels in the jungle.

Nohra Rodriguez, medical chief at the Bogota military hospital where Moncayo was taken, says that the freed hostage “did suffer from episodes of leishmaniasis, which fortunately were controlled in a satisfactory manner.”

The former hostage also had some bruising and hypoglycemia, Rodriguez said, but stressed that they had been treated.

“Mentally, he is doing quite well,” , Rodriguez added.

Moncayo was liberated by the FARC and reunited with his family Tuesday, after 12 years in captivity.

Moncayo’s father Professor Gustavo Moncayo announced Tuesday night that the family are considering leaving Colombia so that his son can but the “bad dream” of the last 12 years behind him.

31 year old Moncayo was kidnapped on December 21, 1997, after FARC guerrillas stormed the Nariño army base where he and 33 other soldiers were located.
