Deceased FARC hostage to be buried

Deceased FARC hostage Julian Ernesto Guevara will finally be laid to rest in Bogota on Monday morning, following DNA confirmation that remains handed over to authorities by the guerrilla organization are indeed those of Guevara.

Guevara’s body will be brought to the Primada Cathedral in Bogota, where family and friends will bid their farewell to the fallen policeman, reports El Mundo.

Following a service at the cathedral, which will be held by Cardinal Pedro Rubiano, Guevara will be laid in his final resting place in the police mausoleum at the cemetery Jardines de Paz in the Colombian capital.

Guevara’s remains were released by the FARC on Thursday, after almost a year of negotiation between the FARC and Colombian authorities, and the release of hostages Pablo Emilio Moncayo and Josue Daniel Calvo.

Guevara died in 2006 following nearly eight years in FARC captivity, after being kidnapped along with 42 other Colombian policemen in 1998.

His cause of death is yet to be made public. FARC hostage release coordinator Piedad Cordoba told press she believed he may have died from a tropical disease.
