Correa to attend Santos’ inauguration

Ecuadorean President Rafael Correa plans to attend the inauguration of Juan Manuel Santos as Colombia’s president on August 7, according to Ecuadorean Vice President Lenin Moreno, reports EFE.

Moreno said that of course Correa would attend the ceremony, as the neighboring countries are “in an open process of good relations,” provided that in the future they would each be “careful to respect the sovereignty of our respective countries.”

Relations between Ecuador and Colombia have been under additional strain following recent allegations that the Colombian intelligence agency DAS spied on President Correa and other top Ecuadorean officials.

Ecuador announced Monday that it would continue investigations into the allegations of wiretapping, despite a strong denial by Colombian President Alvaro Uribe, which Ecuadorean authorities described as “important.”

Vice President Moreno said that no judgements would be made until after the completion of the investigations.

The neighboring countries have been moving towards repairing diplomatic relations, after the rupture which followed a 2008 bombing raid by Colombia of a FARC camp on Ecuadorean territory.
