Cordoba congratulates Obama on Nobel Peace Prize

Colombian opposition Senator Piedad Cordoba Friday congratulated U.S. President Barack Obama for being awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. Cordoba had been tipped as one of the most probable to win the prestigious award.

On her twitter page, Cordoba congratulated Obama and wrote that “with or without the Nobel I will continue to do the same I have done all this time. Work for peace in Colombia.”

Cordoba’s international fame rose two weeks ago, after a prominent Norwegian peace activist speculated that she was the most probable to win this year’s Nobel Peace Prize. The Colombian had the best odds in the UK, where people were able to place bets on who would win.

In anticipation of a possible award, the senator’s website was redesigned to focus on her work for peace in Colombia.

The opposition senator is highly controversial in Colombia as she and her peace activist group ‘Colombians for Peace’ were accused by the Alvaro Uribe administration of being part of the FARC’s “Intellectual Bloc.” A large group of Colombians are offended by the politician’s close ties to Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez and her critical stance towards the country’s popular President.
