La Equidad, Once Caldas and Santa Fé won their opening matches of the
2009 Copa Mustang I, on a day with relatively few goals in most games.
Atlético Nacional couldn’t convince in their first game, played against La Equidad at El Techo stadium. The home side scored the only goal of the match through Polo with just three minutes to go.
Deportivo Pereira, who reached the final phase in last season’s Copa Mustang II, didn’t get off to a good start this time. Visiting side Once Caldas scored the only and winning goal through Fano on 73 minutes.
Santa Fé needed just one goal to beat newly promoted Real Cartagena at El Campín. Arrechea netted just before the break to earn the ‘Cardinals’ their first win of the season.
The most spectacular match of the weekend was without a doubt the clash between Envigado and Deportivo Cali. The home side took the lead on three occasions, through Morantes, Serna and Grisales, but Cali equalised the same amount of times with Herrón, Herrera and Batalla hitting the net.
Independiente Medellín struggled against a very defensive Deportivo Pasto, who took the lead through Villamil in the 66th minute, but Martínez levelled 14 minutes later to at least earn the home side a point.
Deportes Quindío and Deportes Tolima held each other to a 1-1 draw. Bolivar first put the Ibagué outfit ahead on 12 minutes but Hernández balanced things close to the hour.
After one match day, the Copa Mustang had six leaders: América, Junior, Chicó, La Equidad, Once Caldas and Santa Fé.
