Conservatives ask former TV CEO to run for Bogota mayor

The Conservative Party on Thursday asked the recently resigned CEO of television network Caracol to run for mayor of Bogota in October’s elections.

The Conservatives asked other parties in the national government coalition of President Juan Manuel Santos to join the party and back the former CEO and presenter of “Who Wants to be a Millionaire,” Paulo Laserna, to run against Enrique Peñalosa, the popular former Bogota mayor supported by the opposition Green Party.

According to the Conservatives, they have not yet talked to Laserna, but hope their public support will convince the businessman to run for what is Colombia’s second most important political post.

Laserna resigned as CEO of Caracol last week reportedly because of frictions between him and other directors of one of Colombia’s two national commercial channels.
