Colombia’s Polo Democratico Alternativo party this weekend will name either Senator Jorge Enrique Robledo or chairwoman Clara Lopez as its candidate for the 2014 Presidential elections this weekend, newspaper El Espectador reported Thursday.
According to former Representative Wilson Borja, although the nominee will not be revealed until this coming weekend, the leading candidates are Robledo — voted Colombia’s best senator in a poll among opinion makers — and the former mayor of Bogota.
“Although [being nominated] would be a source of pride, we have to look more for the most suitable match for the party,” said Robledo.
Lopez was just as noncommittal in her statement.
“The Polo has excellent candidates, one of them being Dr. Jorge Robledo,” Lopez said earlier this week.
The socialist Polo Democratico, even though it only has a few seats in Congress, is Colombia’s main opposition party.
