Colombia’s sacked soccer coach also lost marriage over bar brawl scandal

Colombia’s national soccer team coach publicly discussed Thursday the repercussions he faced for striking a woman outside a Bogota bar last August.

Hernan Dario Gomez told Radio Caracol that the scandal and his subsequent departure from the Colombian team have hit very hard with him and his family, which caused him to separate from his wife.

“She was very intelligent. She told me ‘I know you and I know that you are not one to treat women badly, but you were with someone that wasn’t me. I am clouded, badly,'” said Gomez of his wife.

The soccer coach also indicated that his son and mother had both suffered due to his actions, including threats of blackmail.

The last time Gomez spoke to the media, 131 days ago, he apologized for attacking the woman and said that he had mixed wine and brandy with heart pressure medicine the night of the attack, which was a bad mix.

He declared that he was not going to ask to be rehired and that it was not unreasonable to bring in a foreign coach; however, he did feel that the incident was blown out of proportion and that he was being treated worse than a murderer, criminal, and guerrilla.
