Colombia’s local election campaigns close

Campaigns for Colombia’s governors, mayors, assemblies and councils closed down Sunday ahead of Sunday’s local elections.

By law, the week before elections, candidates are prohibited to campaign or make public appearances.

Meanwhile, the Colombian government has started it’s “Democracy Plan,” which includes the mobilization of some 360,000 members of the security forces, to guarantee the elections will not be disturbed by illegal armed groups like the FARC or ELN.

On Friday, two days before the elections, rigid measures, including a complete alcohol ban, will be in place. Media will be restricted to report on disturbances during the elections.
