Colombia’s first female General

The National Police Friday promoted Luz Marina Bustos to General as the first woman in Colombia’s history.

After 29 years working for the Police, Bustos received her star by General Oscar Naranjo, National Police Commissioner, during the promotion ceremony which was also attended by President Uribe.

It is not the first time Bustos was appointed to a position which was never held by a woman before. In August 2004, for example, she was the first female to be promoted to the Director of Health.

Bustos joined the General Santander School in January 1980 at the age of 20 years. She was one of 14 women who were first permitted to start a career at the Police, only half of them completed the course.

Colombia’s first female General has three children and is married to a police man. “My husband has always supported me, he never felt jealous. Some sacrifice their career for their marriage, but in my case it was never an option”, Bustos told El Espectador.

The National Police counts 146,000 members of which around 6,000 are female.
