Up to 20,000 people have been left homeless around Colombia by devastating weather brought by the rainy season, which officially started on April 6th, according to disaster relief director Luz Amanda Pulido.
Eight people have so far lost their lives, while 88 municipalities across 22 departments have been affected by the carnage, reported El Espectador.
The Tolima department is the worst affected region as 150 families have been assisted in recent days.
Pulido said that the government is taking steps to prevent further damage and protect at-risk communities, which includes providing humanitarian assistance to victims of the rains.
The relief director also called on local authorities to set up prevention workshops and help relocate households vulnerable to landslides and floods.
Antioquia, Boyaca, Cauca, Cundinamarca, Meta, Nariño, Tolima and Valle have so far recorded the most damage and casualties.
