Colombian products to reach 1.4B consumers: Santos

Colombian president Juan Manuel Santos said on Tuesday that Colombian products will reach 1.4 billion consumers by 2014 due to the free trade agreements.

The remarks were made during the 20th anniversary celebrations of the Trade Ministry which took place in Colombia’s capital Bogota.

“Today we are arriving at more than 180 markets in the world, we are penetrating new markets and we are discerning very important markets without forgetting the importance of the traditional markets,” said the Colombian president.

Santos said that he expects to end his presidential term in 2014 with “1.4 billion consumers, a real important change.”

The president also brought attention to the great potential of Colombian agriculture but also stressed that changes would have to be made before the agricultural sector could access some of the new opening markets.

“The agricultural potential that is mentioned with reference to the food crisis is enormous, but at the same time we have to be aware that we haven’t got the culture and good practices in the agricultural sector for the strawberries, rasberries and melons that we can produce here, as they require precise specifications in the markets opening for us,” said Santos

Santos concluded by saying that Colombia was advancing fast towards the new open markets in the world.

“Our foreign trade per capita is still very small in this country, but we have immense potential and from here we are accelerating the process of accessing the opening markets,” said the president.
