Colombian named Thrasher magazine’s skater of the year

Colombian David Gonzalez joins skating world legends Tony Hawk, Mike Carroll, John Cardiel, Brian Anderson, and Mark Appleyard as the latest winner of Thrasher magazine’s skater of the year, Thrasher announced Tuesday.

The prestigious Thrasher award has been given out once a year since 1990. It is considered one of the most respected skateboarding awards in the industry, and is now honoring pro-Colombian skateboarder David Gonzalez as Skateboarder Of The Year (SOTY) 2012.

Gonzalez, 22, grew up in Bello, a city bordering Medellin. By the age of 13 Gonzalez was already showing glimpses of the skate legend he would become. The promising young talent soon came to the attention of skateboard company Flip Skateboards, who signed him to a sponsorship contract. Suddenly, the 13-year-old Medellin native found himself in California USA, with his dreams well on the way to being fulfilled.

Gonzalez currently lives in Long Beach, California.
