Colombian musician, Portuguese band win World Music Contest

Colombian saxophonist Agustin Castro Castro represented Colombia in the Portuguese Symphonic Band and together the group won the 60th World Music Contest in the town of Kerkrade in the Netherlands.

The group won the title with a score of 98 out of 100 possible points, reportedly achieving the highest score in the 60-year history of the contest.

The event is internationally known as the world championship of symphonic bands. The World Music Contest is held every four years and receives thousands of participants from all over the world.

The 31-year old Colombian musician, Castro, obtained his Bachelor of Music at the Universidad de Caldas, and was a saxophone music teacher at the same institution for 4 years. He was also the founder and director of the school’s Saxophone Orchestra.

The Portuguese Symphonic Band is made up of 75 musicians, under the direction of Francisco Ferreira, a professor of saxophone at the Conservatorio de Musica do Porto and Director of Studies at the Academia Costa Cabral.
