Colombian meteorologists warn for more rain

Despite the official end of weather phenomenon La Niña, blamed for heavy rains that have lashed down on Colombia since last year, Colombian meteorologists told authorities to stay on high alert as heavy showers are expected until mid-June.

According to the director of meteorological institute IDEAM, Yolanda Gonzalez, it is important to stay on alert because “on national territory we will still have rain, especially in the north of the country. This time of year the rains focus on the Caribbean region and the east of Colombia,” she told W Radio.

Also in the mountainous departments Santander, Cundinamarca, Antioquia and the coffee region more rain is expected, be it with less intensity than before.

The extended rainy season began the beginning of last year only only saw two week-long breaks in August and February. Because of the excessive rainfall, millions of Colombians have damages to their homes or lands and more than 300 have died.
