Soccer fan killed, 4 hospitalized after Medellin derby

A soccer fan died from a gunshot wound and four were hospitalized in clashes among fans following the Medellin derby between Atletico Nacional and Independiente Medellin Sunday.

The confrontations followed Independiente’s shock 2-1 victory over their more popular rivals, which prompted acts of destruction in the area surrounding Medellin’s Atanasio Giradot stadium.

As well as reports of damage to a car and a rock being thrown at a train, the stadium’s metro station was closed down temporarily as riot police were called in to quell fans.

Colombia Reports witnessed the removal of one fan from the stadium on a stretcher and pockets of occasional disruption in the crowd, though rival fans sat side-by-side in certain areas of the stadium.

Police reported the detention of 350 people by Sunday night, and the confiscation of 450 weapons, including a revolver.
