Colombia defender Carlos Valdes is once again joining Major League Soccer club Philadelphia Union. He returns after a year-and-a-half loan to his former club Santa Fe and San Lorenzo from Argentina.

The defender left the United States to maximize his chances of playing in the national jersey at this year’s World Cup. And the lending period might have been the helping hand he needed as Valdes was allowed to play one match against Japan.

The Colombian previously impressed with the Philadelphia Union and was named an MLS All-Star in 2012. Valdes started in all 65 matches he has played for the Philadelphian squad, and scored three goals and making one assist.

The familiar face might just be the rearmament Philadelphia needs in the defense, The Philadelphians have conceded 36 goals in 22 games, leaving them as the fourth worst goal guarding team in the league. The team is currently seventh in the league, and if it stays this way they won’t make the cut for the playoffs.

Valdes can prove his worth on the pitch this Saturday when Philadelphia Union is hosting a match against Montreal Impact.
