Colombia VP to undergo heart surgery

Colombian Vice President  is “conscious and stable” prior to undergoing heart surgery, says a doctor at a Bogota hospital where  was rushed Monday with a suspected heart attack.

The vice president will undergo surgery on the heart muscle Monday morning.

It is unclear whether Garzon suffered a heart attack. Health Minister Hector Zambrano told W Radio that the vice president was suffering high blood pressure, while the director of the hospital treating Garzon told press that the politician suffered a cardiac arrest.

Garzon was rushed to hospital early Monday morning with chest pains. He was immediately admitted to the private Shaio clinic where at 11AM he was being prepared for surgery.

The vice president has only been in office since Saturday, when he and other members of the government of Juan Manuel Santos were sworn in.
