The International Narcotics Control Board (INCB) removes Colombia from its watch list of countries with a drug trafficking problem, El Espectador reported Tuesday.
The latest INCB report highlights the successes of Colombia’s fight against drug trafficking, although it notes that Colombia will remain under constant evaluation.
Cocaine abuse is reportedly on the rise in several South American countries, such as Argentina, Brazil,Chile and Uruguay.
The report commends Colombia’s successes in combating narco-trafficking, while indicating that Venezuela, Ecuador, Peru and Brazil are increasingly becoming more relevant in the cocaine market.
This information arrives despite U.N. officials warning that in 2010 Colombia remained the largest supplier of cocaine to Europe, reports RCN Radio.
Juan Carlos Restrepo, the National Director of Narcotics, said that “this is a recognition which affirms that things in Colombia are on the right track and that the Colombian government has taken important steps in the fight against drug trafficking,” quotes Radio Santa Fe.
