Colombia signs deal with Discovery Channel

The Colombian government has signed a $1 million deal with the Discovery Channel to make programs for its citizens.

The agreement, signed at the presidential palace, will see the government and the channel come together to jointly produce content for a Colombian audience.

It will be available to all Colombians with a television.

According to the government, a committee of national and international experts will ensure that the programs made are of interest to an audience inside and outside the country, that they contribute to the development and promotion of Colombian culture, and that they reflect the reality and history of the country.

Technology, Information and Communication Minister Diego Molano said, “Discovery Channel is interested in our country thanks to the mature conditions of our local industry and the foreign investment politics of this government, which has made a big effort (…) to achieve cohesive and quality public television.”

It’s hoped the first Discovery Channel program will be seen on Colombian screens this year.

The network has 130 international television channels reaching more than 1,500 million subscribers in 200 countries.
