Colombia ‘not worried’ by WikiLeaks revelations

Minister German Vargas Lleras said that Sunday’s WikiLeaks revelations relating to Colombian politics do not worry the government.

Justice and Interior Minister German Vargas Lleras told El Tiempo on Sunday evening that the WikiLeaks cables, “Don’t worry us.”

“It gives information transparency and is a problem of the United States Embassy,” he added.

However, Vice President Angelino Garzon acknowledged that the new disclosures should be handled with care, adding that the government “must be respectful of the wires we do not already know about.”

On Sunday WikiLeaks released a batch of cables that showed considerable flaws in the way former President Alvaro Uribe’s government handled the demobilization process of the AUC, failing to prevent the rise of neo-paramilitary organizations.

More revelations are due with El Espectador having been granted access to 16,000 cables relevant to Colombia and Venezuela.

The paper plans to release new information on a weekly basis.
