Colombia has hired English lawyers in efforts to reverse a recent ruling by the world court granting maritime territory to Nicaragua, the country’s foreign minister announced Wednesday.
Foreign Minister Maria Angela Holguin stated that the lawyers would appeal the International Court of Justice’s decision on this matter.
“We hired an English law firm that will file the appeal before the ICJ,” Holguin told press, contradicting experts who have said the judgment cannot be appealed.
The ICJ ruled last month that Nicaragua had the right to claim waters in the Caribbean that Colombia considered part of its maritime territory for decades. In the same ruling, the world court affirmed that the islands in the western Caribbean, San Andres and Providencia belong to Colombia.
