Over one ton of cocaine was intercepted in transit by Colombian authorities in the Caribbean coastal state of La Guajira.
According to police sources the cocaine belonged to criminal organization known as the “Rastrojos,” a descendent of the powerful Norte del Valle drug cartel.
The contraband was uncovered in a white pickup truck with Venezuelan license plates. According to authorities, the cocaine was travelling from processing laboratories in central Colombia to the Caribbean coast to be shipped by go-fast boat to Central America, with a final destination of Mexico or the United States.
During the police operation the suspects fled the scene, leaving behind the pickup truck and the cocaine.
“When they saw the police, the suspects began shooting, and managed to flee to a rural zone, abandoning the truck and the drugs,” said Colombian National Police sources.
Police found 1,072 kilos of cocaine hydrochloride within the abandoned vehicle.
