Colombia approves new flight routes to UK, Canada

Colombia’s civil aviation authority on Tuesday approved new direct flights routes from Bogota to London and Cartagena to Toronto.

Colombia’s largest airline Avianca will start operating daily flights between Bogota and London, marking the first time in ten years that passengers from the UK can fly directly to Colombia without having to change in Madrid or Frankfurt.

Avianca will also operate daily flights from Bogota to Frankfurt, three weekly connections from Bogota to Barcelona and one weekly flight from Bogota to Madrid.

Copa Airlines will offer two weekly direct flights from Cartagena to Toronto beginning in Summer 2013 and is set to increase that number to four starting in 2014.

Aerocivil, Colombia’s civil aviation authority, approved the new international flights to increase the country’s connection worldwide, the government agency said in a press release. It also gave the go-ahead for new national routes, in an effort to make local airlines more competitive.

On a national level, Avianca will start offering daily flights between Cali and several cities on the Colombian Caribbean coast.

Civil Aeronautics approved low-cost domestic carrier Easyfly’s routes from the northern coastal city of Barranquilla to Aruba and Barranquilla to the northeastern city of Valledupar.
