Colombia appoints new National Police director

The Colombian government announced Friday Friday that Jose Roberto Leon will succeed Oscar Naranjo, the widely hailed outgoing National Police director who will step down on May 15.

Leon is the current deputy director of the National Police and responsible for the design and execution of a number of police policies aimed at increasing public security in the cities and improving the force’s human rights record.

The new top cop has been with the police for 34 years during which he was decorated 83 times.
