Colombia and US unveil new anti-narco scheme

Colombia’s Interior and Justice Minister Fabio Valencia Cossio, and U.S. Ambassador to Colombia William Brownfield, announced a new joint initiative between the two countries to combat drug trafficking and terrorism, reported the Ministry’s website.

Meeting at the National Narcotics Council, the two countries’ representatives agreed that new security plans on the production of illicit drugs will be put into effect in some of Colombia’s most terrorized regions.

The U.S. Embassy-run Initiative for the Strategic Development of Colombia (CSDI) will devise a new strategy with the co-operation and support of state authorities, local officials and the U.S. government.

A recent study conducted by the U.S. Embassy in Colombia identified five zones in the country in which citizens are particularly threatened by the drug trade.

Brownfield explained that the CSDI would be implementing new security measures as soon as possible in those five regions, which have been indentified as La Macarena, the River Caguan, the Pacific zone, Antioquian Cauca and Southern Tolima.
