City council candidate killed in Antioquia

Colombian politician Gildardo de Jesus Gomez, candidate in upcoming city council elections in the northwestern Colombian department of Antioquia, was assassinated by burglars in his home, informed regional authorities.

Gomez, 56, died Thursday evening after having suffered multiple gunshot wounds from unknown assailants attempting to burglarize his country estate, Caracol Radio reported.

According to regional police, the thieves entered the premises and tied up the workers. When Gomez appeared armed with a machete in an attempt to protect his staff, he was riddled with bullets.

Gomez was running for city councilman in the upcoming October 30 regional elections.

Police reported that the crime had no apparent connection to the political activities of the victim. They are currently working in conjunction with the district attorney to find and prosecute those responsible.
