Neither one of the parties wanted to get into details of the meeting, held at the Archbishop’s Palace in Bogota. A press statement issued by the Presidency however, said the meeting was “very fruitful and cordial”, adding it was “an important step”.The fight between the Uribe administration and the high court led to a constitutional crisis in Colombia. Uribe reacted furiously after the Court ordered the Constitutional Court to investigate the possible illegality of the 2006 presidential elections and wanted a popular referendum about a possible rerun of the elections.The Court had decided to call for an investigation after former congresswoman Yidis Medina was sentenced for bribery. She had admitted having changed her vote about a constitutional change needed to make a re-election of Colombia’s popular president possible.Uribe has since accused judges of the Court of involvement with paramilitary groups, negligence and is seeking a radical reform of the Court.The crisis was ended by the Constitutional Court that ignored the Supreme Court’s order to investigate the possible illegality. Uribe hinted he may drop the referendum after that.Uribe and Ricaurte agreed to a second meeting to further improve relations.
