Chef Burger: the latest in Medellin’s fast food burger craze

Sink your teeth into a heart-stoppingly delicious “Chef” burger, Medellin’s latest installment in Colombia’s fast food-obsessed burger craze.

For the brave at heart, Chef Burger offers the monstrously juicy Pepper Jack cheeseburger. 150 grams of 100% flame grilled beef, a slab of pepper jack cheese, arugula, grilled peppers, avocado, onions and (I know, you can’t believe it) an arepa. Stuffing that down will make your eyes swim in a glaze of post-coital bliss.

The many variations of deluxe burger artistry include the Greek, the Mexican, and the Argentinian, which is tailored to the specifications of the chef behind Chef Burger, Alejandro Fernandez, who is, in fact, from Argentina.

For suckers there’s the classic burger with nothing on it but lettuce and tomato.

All burgers come with a side of savory french fries or skin-on potato wedges, and a thoughtful assortment of American brand condiments like the not-so-easy-to-find-in-Colombia Heinz ketchup, as well as spicy mustard, steak sauce, mayo and barbeque.

Salads are also on offer, if you’ve completely lost your mind.

The atmosphere is lively and well lit. According to the proprietor of Chef Burger, Ivan Castaño, the decor is derived from a 1970’s New Orleans bar.

Chef Burger is wildly popular. The Facebook page has over 10,000 likes, even though the restaurant opened less than two years ago. The only problem being that there may be a line, even on a Monday night, and diners may feel the anxious pressure of the wait staff who are eager to turn tables.

All jokes aside the portions are perfect, the service is serviceable, the price is right, and the food is quite delicious.

Chef Burger can be found in Poblado at Calle 11A N 42-25, and in Laureles at the intersection of Carrera 76 and Transversal 39, two blocks north west of the Segundo Parque de Laureles. There is also a food truck making rounds. Burgers are between 10,000 and 20,000 pesos, and the beer is cold.
