Colombian citizens sabotaging FTAs: Uribe

President Alvaro Uribe on Wednesday accused Colombians of joining international organizations in an attempt to prevent other countries from signing trade agreements with Colombia.

“Our own countrymen are joining international organizations that discredit the government, our security policies, denying us these [trade] possibilities,” complained Uribe in a report by news station Caracol Radio.

Uribe claimed these Colombians were seeking to stop the signing of an FTA with the United States and were also now putting a proposed trade agreement with the European Union at risk.

The president said this group of Colombians wished to see the government’s investment policy fail and he stressed that such initiatives were “doing a great deal of harm.”
