Cell phone thieves add to death toll in Bogota

Another victim of cell phone robbery has lost his life after being stabbed multiple times in Bogota, Caracol Radio reported Sunday.

Benicio Sandoval was crossing a bridge in western Bogota when he was attacked by thieves who were after his phone and other belongings. The incident occurred at around 10PM Saturday evening as Sandoval was returning home from work.

The victim, a security guard at a local shopping center, died at the scene after suffering multiple stab wounds in what was still a crowded sector of the city.

The death comes just days after the government announced new measures to attempt to clamp down on phone-theft through stricter laws regarding the usage and resale of stolen cell phones.
