The Medellin-born Calle, 29 years old, won Bronze at the Athens Olympics in 2004 and aimed to improve that result this year.
After six of ten sprints, Calle was in shared first position with Dutch Marianne Vos.
However, Vos went on to lap her opponents, which earned her enough to take the Gold at Laoshan’s velodrome. Cuban Yoanka Gonzalez and Spanish Leire Olaberria were stronger in the final few sprints and surpassed the Colombian for Silver and Bronze.
Calle earned thirteen points. The same amount as Olaberria, but the latter finished the final sprint in second place while Calle came in eighth. This decided the battle for Bronze.
Calle herself is happy with the result, she told Radio Caracol: “I’m very happy. I had the medal for a long time but in the end I’m happy anyway. A fourth place at the Olympics is a great spot. It was a very tough race but I felt good.”
“I’ll be reader for the Olympics in London, 2012?, the cyclist concluded.
