Caceres in stable condition as investigation proceeds

Senator Javier Caceres, who was arrested Tuesday over parapolitics allegations and subsequently rushed to a Bogota hospital, has been declared in stable condition by the director of the hospital.

Former Senate President Caceres was arrested due to allegations that the paramilitary group financed his election campaign. Later that day he went to hospital with a diabetes-related condition.

Representatives from the Prosecutor General’s Office are speaking with Carceres in the hospital, due to a rule that they must interview those detained with in 36 hours. The court will then have five days to decide if they wish to proceed with the charges against him.

Carcers’ lawyer said that the senator’s hospitalization is not a result of his arrest, and that he was in fragile health prior to Tuesday’s events. He added that Caceres intends to check himself into a hospital in Cartagena, where he can continue to deal with his health problems.
