Business man denies knowledge of Vargas ‘plot’

Colombia’s northern Barranquilla businessman Rafael McCausland denied knowledge of the alleged plot against Housing Minister German Vargas Lleras, the prosecutor general heard on Friday.

According to the housing minister, McCausland would have seen the bribing of witnesses in what Vargas claimed was a plot to discredit him by alleging paramilitary ties.

McCausland said he wasn’t aware of the existence of a conspiracy and didn’t know anyone who was involved with the plot.

Vargas had named the businessman as one of the main witnesses in the complaint he filed with the prosecutor general against former president Alvaro Uribe’s brother and members of the military.

The housing minister claims that Santiago Uribe, brother of former president Alvaro Uribe, paid witnesses to give false testimony which linked him with paramilitary warlord “Martin Llanos,” claims which Uribe has denied.
