Botero’s cat receives whisker replacement

“The Cat,” a sculpture given to the city of Medellin by Colombian artist Fernando Botero, which lost a whisker within a week of installation, has now been fully restored, local media reported Thursday.

The bronze whisker was constructed in a workshop in Pietrasanta, Italy, where the artist created the work.

The procedure took an hour and a half according to Luis Fernando Molina, curator of Botero works.

“We proceeded to screw the whisker into the original thread on the left side of the cat’s face and then added a liquid welding,” he said.

Whether the whisker’s disappearance was an act of theft or an accident is still a point of debate.
