Bogota stadium to be closed after riot

Congress asks the authorities to close Bogota’s El Campin stadium after violent scenes at a soccer match on Sunday injured five, El Espectador reported Tuesday.

Senator Gilma Jimenez stated that “if we are unable to  control and be responsible for what [the hooligans] are doing, we will definitely have to give up football in Colombia.”

“It is painful but three years ago the Council of Bogota warned the leadership of the hooligans associated with the teams Santa Fe and Millionarios, that after the next incident there would be repercussions,” Jimenez said.

Jimenez has called for the creation of an body to regulate football in Colombia.

The riots took place when supporters of Bogota team Millonarios clashed at the end of Sunday’s game against Atletico Huila.
