Bogota residents refuse relocation amid landslide fears

Hundreds of residents from Bogota slums refuse to be relocated despite authorities’ warnings that the coming rainy season could cause deadly landslides.

The approximately 100 families concerned, who live in high-risk areas in the slums of Usme, San Cristobal and Chapinero Alto, were ordered to take part in a municipal relocation program and abandon their homes.

Bogota housing authorities said the residents are in imminent danger and threatened that the families will be removed from their homes by force if they continue to refuse to cooperate.

According to a report by newspaper El Tiempo earlier this month, some 40,000 Bogotanos live in areas at high risk of landslides.
