Bogota police seized 47,000 weapons in 2009

Authorities in Bogota have seized 1,870 fire arms and 45,418 knives so far in 2009, which amounts to 303 weapons a day El Espectador reported Thursday.

Of the 628 homicides committed in the first five months of 2009, 390 cases involved pistols and 195 involved blunt objects.

Of the 105 suicides in the capital city, 19 used a fire arm and 3 used knives.

In the 6,383 robberies of citizens, 1,113 were committed with fire arms and 1,067 with knives.

Secretary of the Bogota Mayor’s Office Clara Lopez said that “during 16 campaigns to disarm citizens, 6,369 fire arms have been turned in, 91,111 cartridges of ammunition and 651 explosives”.

Lopez said that citizen disarmament of both legal and illegal weapons was “imperative” to create security and put inhibit future crime.
