Bogota police release 893 of 1,060 detained gang suspects

Of the 1,070 suspected criminals arrested last week in Bogota as part of a national police operation against crime in the nation’s capital, 893 have already been freed.

Only 170 were sent to Bogota prisons for crimes including homicide, robbery, kidnapping and extortion.

Out of the 1,070 people arrested, 278 had court orders out for their arrest for crimes ranging from homicide to theft, while the majority of the others arrested during the so-called siege on the city were detained for petty thievery.

2,500 members of the national police arrived in Bogota last week in an operation to combat the crime wave that hit the city in recent weeks.
