Plane catches fire en route to Bogota

A plane flying from Paris to Bogota was forced to make an emergency landing in the Azores Monday after it caught fire, reported Radio Caracol.

Passengers, who included 50 Colombians, reportedly said the plane began to plummet toward the Atlantic Ocean as the smell of smoke reached the cabin.

Colombia’s Ambassador to Portugal, Germain Santamaria, told Radio Caracol, “The fire was reported at the site of the suitcases. Fortunately they were near the Azores islands and could control the situation.”

Santamaria said the Colombian passengers would return to Bogota Tuesday.
