Photography enthusiasts are in for a treat over the next month, as Colombia’s capital of Bogota plays host to more than 30 exhibitions encompassing the work of both local and international talent.
Bogota’s 5th biannual photography festival kicks off on May 4 and continues until June 15. Running on the theme of “Panoramic Landscapes,” the work of both local and international photographers will be showcased across 30 free exhibitions located in city streets, universities, on the Transmilenio bus system, at bus stops, in museums and galleries, and on billboards.
Each festival takes the opportunity to shine a light on a particular country or region and, this year, a special emphasis will be placed on the work of Scandinavian photographers from Norway, Sweden, Finland, Denmark and Iceland. The work of photographers from numerous other nations such as China, the U.S., Israel, Japan, Spain, France, Italy, England, Poland, Canada, and many more will also be on display.
The festival will not be limited solely to exhibitions, however, and a film component emphasizing the work of Nordic filmmakers has also been incorporated into the festivities.
There will also be a slew of workshops run by international artists and held throughout different universities across the city. Each workshop consists of two, two hour sessions. In the first session the artists will take students through their own creative process, while during the second session the artist will review work submitted by the students and then give feedback.
The non-profit organization, FotoMuseo, organized the festival. Founded on August 18, 1998, the organization came to the public’s attention in 2000 with its exhibit “Looks at Bogota,” which advanced the idea of portable photo exhibits in public spaces.
