Bogota demobilized 8,000 fighters in two years

The Bogota mayor’s office claimed Thursday that 8,000 illegally armed people were demobilized during Mayor Samuel Moreno’s first two years in office.

The mayor’s office says that In 2009, 2,640 people were successfully reintegrated into civilian life, and only 78 individuals re-offended, reports El Espectador.

The body invested COP1.6 billion into the demobilization over the two-year period, which corresponds to COP608,712 for each person involved.

This represents a spending increase of 15.5% since Moreno came to office.

The demobilization took place mainly in the capital’s surrounding localities of Bosa, San Cristobal, Ciudad Bolivar, Usme, Martyrs, Rafael Uribe Uribe, Engativa, and La Candelaria.

The mayor’s administration highlighted the fact that 97% of the people in the program had been successfully reintegrated back into civilian life.
