Bogota tops Colombia top tourism destination

Bogota has hosted over 50% of the country’s visitors this year and hopes to remain the most popular tourist destination in Colombia.

Colombia has welcomed one million visitors this year and Bogota has hosted over 550,000 of them, according to Portfolio magazine.

The director of the capital’s Insitute for Tourism, Nohora Isable Vargas, said that “we are very happy, we have maintained Bogota’s position as the number one destination in tourism, when compared to other cities in the country.”

The security issue is the biggest obstacle for Colombia’s capital to turn into a sustainable tourist destination. To counteract this problem Bogota launched a project two years ago that analyzes the issues and and safeguards tourist attractions.

Bogota’s project is expected to serve as role model for other non-touristic places within the capital.

The District Institute for Tourism on Thursday will meet in Bogota to further discuss security issues in connection with tourism.
