Avianca cancels flights to New York, Washington

Colombian airliner Avianca canceled all Saturday and Sunday flights between Bogota and New York and Washington because of extreme weather caused by hurricane Irene.

Avianca said it would resume operations after authorities have confirmed weather conditions have improved.

The airliner announced that travelers with tickets for the canceled flights will be able to change flights for free until September 20.

Irene hit North-Carolina coast earlier Saturday and is expected to arrive in New York City on Sunday afternoon.
