Authors of Awa massacre must be severely punished: government

The Colombian government said on Wednesday that it will make sure the authors of the killing of twelve Awa are severely punished.

It is very important for the government and the Awa people that the Prosecutor General’s manslaughter probe determines the identity of all those guilty of the August massacre, Interior and Justice Minister Fabio Valencia Cossio explained after attending a meeting with Awa leaders and President Alvaro Uribe.

As far as the government is concerned, there is a total guarantee for a fair investigation into the murder of the Awa tribe members in the southern department of Nariño, Valencia said.

Valencia also said that his office had put together a team of experts to study and propose solutions for the Awa people’s problems.

He also anounced that the Colombian Institute for Family Welfare will take care of the orphans of the massacre through Awa foster families.
