Medellin authorities on Sunday seized more than 3,000 rounds of ammunition and almost a ton of explosives from a location in the city’s San Javier neighborhood, reported news channel Caracol.

According to a report by the national army the 3,241 bullets, mostly of 7.61 calibre, were discovered alongside two hand grenades in a hidden location and are thought to belong to gang with narco-trafficking and paramilitary ties.

A statement by army officials said that the seized arms belonged to “criminal gangs that are fueled by drug-trafficking in the city of Medellin.”

The same source also claimed that these materials were destined for cells of armed drug-traffickers and did not rule out the possibility that they may be intended for “acts of sabotage and terrorism” of Colombia’s legislative elections on March 14.
