Army reports record demobilization

Colombia’s army Wednesday reported a record number of FARC and ELN fighters that left their guerrilla groups and demobilized.

According to army statistics, 713 insurgents left their illegal armed group in the first three months and eight days of 2009.

The majority (78%) of the demobilized are FARC guerrillas. Twenty percent are ELN guerrillas and the remaining two percent from other illegal armed groups.

Sixty of the demobilized are minors.
