Army kills 9 FARC guerrillas in Caqueta

Nine FARC guerrillas were killed during a battle in a mountainous area in the southern department of Caqueta by the Colombian Air Force and Joint Task Force OMEGA, which was set up to combat the guerrilla group.

The Colombian armed forces said that they located the camp, which belonged to the “Rodolfo Atanas” column of the guerrillas’ Southern Bloc, and staged an ambush at 4AM.

“The narco-terrorists were hiding in an area next to the Suncillita River … 30 km from [the town of] Cartagena del Chaira [in Caqueta],” the armed forces said in a statement.

Meanwhile, Colombian armed forces seized a 60mm mortar, guns and radio communication equipment in the Cundinamarca town of Junin.

On Sunday, twelve FARC guerrillas were killed by Colombian forces in an attack on one of guerrilla leader “Alfonso Cano’s” security team.

The operation took place around 1AM in a mountainous area called Planadas, some 2,500 meters above sea level.

On Saturday, three Colombian soldiers died in a minefield in the Arauca department, which borders Venezuela.

In the same department, an official from Colombia’s intelligence service DAS was killed and two were injured when alleged FARC guerrillas attacked the vehicle they were driving in.

In a similar attack on a government vehicle in the south-western Cauca department, two policeman and one civilian were killed.

One policeman died when a judicial commission, consisting of prosecution investigators and policemen, was ambushed in the central Antioquia department. A photographer working for the prosecution and two other policemen were injured.
