Argentina wants guarantees US military will only operate inside Colombian borders

Argentina wants Colombia to guarantee that US troops deployed in the
Andean country will only operate inside Colombian territory.

According to Argentinean Defense Minister Nilda Garre, “has generated unrest” among Latin American countries about the U.S.-Colombian plan to allow the North Americans access to at least seven military bases in Colombia.

“Obviously it is a situation that has generated concern in the region, even though Colombia has long and bilateral military cooperation agreements with a state outside the region,” the Minister said.

For this reason Argentina wants “that we all are certain that the forces will only operate within Colombian territory.”

Earlier this week, U.S. ambassador to Bogota, William brownfield, assured U.S. troops will not approach border areas without consulting the governments of the respective countries.

Colombia’s neighbors Venezuela and Ecuador consider the military cooperation a threat to their sovereignty.
